Celebrate the Music of Gil Evans at the Newport Jazz Festival® Produced by Newport Festivals Foundation™ August 3 - 5, 2012
George Wein Shares An Advance Look at the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival®
Among the big bands to make its debut at the Newport Jazz Festival is Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Centennial Project. Delving into the music of one of the most significant arrangers/composers/conductors in the chronicle of jazz, Truesdell will present music from his soon-to-be-released CD of newly-discovered, unrecorded works by Evans from the 1930's - 1980's. The CD is set for release on what would have been Evans' 100th birthday, May 13, but join Ryan Truesdell and thousands of jazz lovers for a very special party in Newport on Sunday, August 5.
"For the last few years, with the help of the Evans family, I've been doing extensive research on Gil Evans' music. Through this process, I have discovered about 50 new works of his that have never-before been recorded. Unable to allow this music to go unheard any longer, I decided to record a selection of these new works in celebration of Gil's 100th birthday," said Truesdell. "After the years of research and planning that went into the making of this recording, I can't think of a better place to present this newly-discovered music than the iconic Newport Jazz Festival. I am excited to present this program at such a historic venue for the first time, and to do so with this tremendous group of musicians is a true honor."
